Child Travel Safety Tips

I'm traveling with kids and it can be an experience especially if you don't know what to do...just sharing with you these things so that we all can relax, even a little!

*All children need their own seats on airplanes.
*If you plan to use a car seat on the plane, make sure that it's FAA approved.
*Ask about child-size emergency equipment.
*Keep your child belted at all times.
*Don't seat your child on the aisle.
*Accompany your child to the lavatory.

Clean As You Go!

Messies.com proposed these ideas to make living easier and more organized. One is to finish up unfinished projects or chores by looking around and spotting one TO DO and clear it out immediately. Sometimes really, doing an unfinished chore can be taxing but not clearing it is taxing too.

Like Doris Mortman's quote: "Until you make peace with who you are, you'll never be content with what you have." Meaning, you don't have to solve psychological problems in order to change your life for the better. Often, however, internal changes are a part of external changes.

Once these things becomes a habit, you will notice that even if you don't clean for a few days, it will still be organized because you've done exactly what you aimed for. And, you've set new standards on organizing!

Crosses

When crosses of life seems heavy to bear, don't ask God to lighten the cross, but ask Him to strengthen your back for you to carry it.

Just ask God to help you, and God will be there!

Twilight

I'm presently reading Stephanie Meyer's first series Twilight and I'm 3/4 done already. I got the hardcopies courtesy of Tess who was kind enough to buy me those hardcopies (which I repaid later) when everybody else was trying to get their own. I'm still so overwhelmed with thanks because I got hardbound copies because of her.

I first got to meet Twilight when I saw the movie, and now, as I was reading the book, I kind of think and compare it to the movie than make my own version. So, it becomes a disadvantage to see the movie first before reading. But I just need to read it.

Reading through the pages, I can now understand more which the movie has edited. I knew each character better (and their names too!) and I just recently knew what Edward was dying of before he became the gorgeous vamp and what happened to his parents, and of course, of the 300plus year old Dr. Cullen. There were scenes and conversations in the book that was put together as one in the movie. Some scenes romantic enough but I guess it would take really long to just put it in the movie (like the scenes when they exchange questions about each other and Edward said 'I love you' to Bella which I did not hear in the movie).

And there's also the infamous clumsiness of Bella that was never part of the movie, and those Edward quips for Bella to take care of herself. Sigh. Now, I find the book better, than the movie ever will. But that wouldn't stop me from seeing the movie.

NOTE:

I discovered that they changed the director of the next series, New Moon. The director of Twilight was Catherine Hardwicke and now it would be Chris Weitz (who directed the ever-boring The Golden Compass). I hope he does justice to the movie and not make it another zzzzzz...(I've linked a profile so that you can see his past accomplishments and maybe it can be justified why he got the slot).

And, I think I have not given credit to Cam Gigandet who portrayed James (He was part of the O.C. series)

Un-Twilight

And if you wanna hear what's the Twilight OST...here's the link. And I agree with what Stephenie Meyer have said:
To conclude, I would like to make a few comments about Rob and Kristen, who are the true heart of this movie. First, they are both amazing actors. Second, they are channeling Edward and Bella like nobody's business. Third, you might want to bring a paper bag to the movie, because their on-screen chemistry may cause hyperventilation. That is all.

True Steph...I got that too.

8 Bathtub Activities

Bath time doesn't have to be a struggle, or even just a wash-and-go affair. Try these activities for tons of tub fun, and both you and your child will look forward to happy bath time. Your kids will love these splish-splashing bathtub games.

1. Make a hand puppet by sewing two washcloths together. Have the puppet talk to her in a funny voice as you soap her up with it.

2. Try the new shampoos and conditioners or "bath crayons" made of soap. These often have kid-friendly scents like strawberry and watermelon (but make sure your child understands they're not for eating!).

3. Sculpt your child's shampooed hair into different shapes. Let her peek in a handheld mirror to see how funny she looks.

4. Use a small sand shovel or other toy to wet and rinse your child's hair. This makes hair washing more fun, and he won't have to put his head under water if he doesn't want to.

5. Throw some plastic toys in the tub to see which ones float. Have your child play "lifeguard" to rescue the toys that sink.

6. Create an assembly line. You wash your child as she washes her waterproof doll or toy.

7. Put a tub twist on old familiar tunes. For example, sing, "Wash your right hand in, wash your right hand out. Do the Hokey Pokey as you rinse it off right now. That's what it's all about!" Or, "If you're happy and you know it, wash your tummy!"

8. Punch holes in the bottom of an empty yogurt container. Have your child fill it with bath water to make it "rain" in the tub.

Sana Maulit Muli

This version is my most favorite version of the song Sana Maulit Muli which was done by RNB Princess Kyla and of course, Mr. Gary V. I really love the blending of these two artists. The melody becomes too beautiful!

The Warrior Is A Child

The Warrior is A Child

Lately I've been winning battles left and right
But even winners can get wounded in the fight
People say that I'm amazing
I'm strong beyond my years
But they don't see inside of me
I'm hiding all the tears

Chorus:
They don't know that I come running home when I fall down
They don't know who picks me up when no one is around
I drop my sword and cry for just a while
(Look up for His smile)
'Coz deep inside this armor
The warrior is a child
(Aahhh)

Unafraid because His arrow is the best
But even soldiers need a quiet place to rest
People say that I'm amazing
I never face retreat, oh no
But they don't see the enemies
That lay me at His feet

Chorus:
They don't know that I come running home when I fall down
They don't know who picks me up when no one is around
I drop my sword and cry for just a while
(Look up for His smile)
'Coz deep inside this armor
The warrior is a child
(Aahhh)

They don't know that I come running home when I fall down
They don't know who picks me up when no one is around
I drop my sword and cry for just a while
(Look up for His smile)
'Coz deep inside this armor
The warrior is a child
(Aahhh)

Take Me Out Of The Dark

In times when we feel down and we don't have anyone else to turn to, we look up and surrender our sufferings to the Almighty. And when we finally talk our troubles to Him, we feel rested. This is one beautiful song by Gary Valenciano that I sing when I feel down.

TAKE ME OUT OF THE DARK

Just what is it in me?
Sometimes I just don't know
What keeps me in Your love,
Why you never let me go

And though you're in me now,
I fall and hurt you still
My Lord, please show me how
To know just how you feel

You have forgiven me
Too many times it seems
I feel I'm not what you might call
A worthy Christian after all

And though I love You so
Temptation finds its way to me

Teach me to trust in You
With all my heart
To lean not on my own understanding
I just forget
You won't give me what I can't bear

Take me out of the dark, my Lord
I don't wanna be there

You've never left my side
You gave Your hand to me to hold
Oh Jesus, I'm no longer in the cold

And yet, I leave You there
When I feel satisfied
I'd like to thank You every day
Not only when I feel that way

I've never known a Man
Who'd give His life for sinners like me
And yet, because He loves us so
He's promised us eternity
And we can have that promise
And be His if we have faith
And just believe

Teach us to trust in you
With all my heart
To lean not on my own understanding
We just forget
You won't give us what we can't bear

Take us out of the dark, My Lord
'Cause we don't want to be alone
Take me out of the dark, My Lord
We don't wanna be there, My Lord

Trust in You with all my heart
Lean not on my own understanding
I just forget
You won't give me what I can't bear

Take me out of the dark, My Lord
Cause we don't want to be alone
Take me out of the dark, My Lord
I don't want to be there

Gabon IS Sambong!!!

Finally! I found what Gabon is!

You see, in one of my posts, I talked about this gabon (in bisaya) that i do not know what it means in English or in Tagalog. The, I remember asking about it in an alternative clinic, and the secretary told me it's Sambong! And guess what else I've found out about this wonder plant aside from being noted as one of the approved herbal medicine by Department of Health? Found here.

Alternative Healing

There are times that we feel something in our body that seems out of proportion and we mostly opted to seek the help of medicine. And then afterwards we are given too many meds that our body can take and after a while, it can be so dreary at times. What there alternatives can we choose?

I believe in the power of healing through these: massage, yoga, herbal plants. I've read that for you to be well, your mind should be well. And of course, with the help of these alternative meds. I even saw in the TV, a doctor who was diagnosed with a heart ailment, but was too overwhelmed with the many medicines she have to take daily and she wouldn't get even better by taking those meds, so she opted to practice alternative medicine. Till now, she's healthy and helping others through what she believes in.

I myself practice it through what I read like reflexology and accupressure. I am doing some yoga but not to the fullest since I'm still a meat eater. Massage really helps, and at times, its more relaxing and easy to do (and free). You just have to use your good two hands or with the help of your partner. And yes, it helps a lot cause it releases your yin and yang. Coz they said that if yin and yang is not balanced, that's the time your body will be susceptible to illness. And by the way, I heard Kris Aquino said that cell regeneration takes place at 10pm to 3am, the best time to sleep. It's the time to heal our body of its misplaces, and always drink water too.

MMK's Latest Episode: Transistor

This night's MMK's latest episode is a tearjerker as you watch two persons love purely and divine. For those who are single, they would want and wish for somebody like the man in the episode. Pure love, all too understanding, caring...For us who are married, it makes us wish to have that kind of love that's eternal.

I found two versions from Youtube, one is sung by Rey Valera (with a funny video) and one by Rico J. Puno created by a loving husband in celebration of their 13th wedding anniversary.

Part of our 'play' in Pediatric Nursing class. It's about the changes that happen to people as they grow old. This is the Late Adult Stage. Watch 'em and weep. :) Written and directed by the lovel...

heartily and lovingly dedicated to my wife for our 13th year anniversary last October 20, 2008

KAHIT MAPUTI NA ANG BUHOK KO
(Even If My Hair Is Grey)

Kung tayo’y matanda na
Sana’y di tayo magbago
(If we're already old I hope we won't change)
At kailan ma’y, nasaan ma’y
Ito ang pangarap ko
(Whenever, wherever this is my dream)

Makuha mo pa kayang
Ako’y hagkan at yakapin ooh
Hanggang pagtanda natin
(Would you still kiss and hug me until we get old)
Nagtatanong lang sa `yo
Ako pa kaya’y ibigin mo
Kung maputi na ang buhok ko
(I'm just asking you this if you will still love me
If my hair grows grey)

Pagdating ng araw
Ang `yong buhok
Ay puputi na rin (puputi na rin)
(Someday your hair will also grey)
Sabay tayong mangangarap
Ng nakaraan sa `tin
(We will dream our past together)

[chorus]
Ang nakalipas ay ibabalik natin ooh
Ipapaalala ko sa `yo
(We will reminisce our past, I will tell you again)
Ang aking pangako
Na ang pag-ibig ko’y laging sa ‘yo
(My promise that my love is always with you)
Kahit maputi na ang buhok ko
(Even when my hair grows grey)
[repeat chorus]

Kahit maputi o wala na ang
Buhok ko

Alone in a Long Flight with Toddlers

We are planning to take a long trip cross-country with 17 hours minimum. At present, the idea of flying with a 1-year old plus and a 5-years old with only me to carry them both (plus bags) makes it not so appealing. Now, I'm trying to look for possible ideas to make the flight minus the squirming, crying, pesky, hyper-active attitudes so common at their age. Need help here. Any ideas?

I've been reading some suggestions through the net and I'm planning to apply them, and I need more...thanks!

FrancisM's Kaleidoscope

So many faces, so many races
Different voices, different choices
Some are mad, while others laugh
Some live alone with no better half
Others grieve while others curse
And others mourn behind a big black hearse
Some are pure and some half-bred
Some are sober and some are wasted
Some are rich because of fate and
Some are poor with no food on their plate
Some stand out while others blend
Some are fat and stout while some are thin
Some are friends and some are foes
Some have some while some have most

Every color and every hue
Is represented by me and you
Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
In this kaleidoscope world

Some are great and some are few
Others lie while some tell the truth
Some say poems and some do sing
Others sing through their guitar strings
Some know it all while some act dumb
Let the bassline strum to the bang of the drum
Some can swim while some will sink
And some will find their minds and think
Others walk while others run
You can't talk peace and have a gun
Some are hurt and start to cry
Don't ask me how don't ask me why
Some are friends and some are foes
Some have some while some have most

Every color and every hue
Is represented by me and you
Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
In this kaleidoscope world

8 Products NOT To Buy For Kids

I read in ConsumerReports about the surprise hazardous products that we should not give to our kids. Here's the list:

1. Trampolines. A trampoline is an accident waiting to happen. In 2003, the latest year for which data are available, some 98,000 trampoline-related injuries resulted in emergency room visits, according to the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission. At least 6 deaths have been reported since 1990.

2. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Consumers Union has long been critical of ATVs; early models, especially, were unstable, and many young people who rode them couldn't handle them. Designs have changed, though we still don't think children under 16 should ride ATVs. Of more than 450 ATV deaths in 2004, the latest year available, roughly one third involved children under 16.

3. Inflatable pools. We're concerned about a certain type of pool on the market: Inflatable pools that hold hundreds, sometimes thousands, of gallons of water. These pools, which start at around $50, are too big to dump the water out of every day, and too inexpensive for most people to consider installing a fence. So they sit unattended in the backyard, a drowning hazard.

4. Yo-yo balls. This toy looks like fun; you might see it as a birthday party favor. But the first versions were dangerous because they could wrap around a child's neck; we judged them "Not Acceptable" in 2003. We repeated that warning in 2005 when another Yo-Yo ball model was released, this time with a small flashing light that could come loose and cause choking (see our 2005 report). At least one state and several countries have banned Yo-yo balls. The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission has received 16 complaints about victims loosing consciousness, and 400 other complaints.

5. Baby bath seats. These seats attach to the side of the tub, and can give parents a false sense of stability. They've been associated with roughly 120 drownings and 160 injuries since 1983. Nearly all those deaths occurred when a parent or caregiver left the baby unattended momentarily. (Note that baby bath seats are different than baby bathtubs, which have a steeply angled back that helps the parent support the baby during baths. Baby bathtubs are useful provided caretakers don't leave the child unattended.)

6. Soft bedding. The ads in baby magazines suggest that if your crib isn't spilling over with frills and fluff, you're somehow shirking your parental duty. In fact, the safest crib is one that has a firm mattress, a snug-fitting mattress pad and crib sheet--and nothing else. No bumper guards, no stuffed animals, no pillows, no quilts. Experts have long recognized the suffocation risk inherent in such soft crib bedding.

7. Sleep positioners. These are wedge-shaped pieces of foam meant to keep infants in a secure sleeping position. But we believe they're a suffocation hazard and our medical experts don't recommend them. (See our March 2005 report and video on sleep-positioner dangers.)

8. Changing tables with only 3 side rails. Changing tables are associated with 2,000 to 3,000 injuries per year, and many of these involve changing tables that have just three side rails. A new industry standard will require changing tables to have barriers on all four sides. Seek out this type when buying a changing table.

Francis Magalona

I was shocked to hear from Wowowee that the King of Rap francis Magalona died today at 12:20PM. It kind of hurting to see someone who was passionate about his ideals and now all will be just a memory. I thought about his family and the pain they have to deal with his passing. Condolence.

In the news, what caused his death was not the illness itself but the complication from it. It ws said to be pneumonia which caused his death.

'Magalona, was diagnosed in August, 2008, with leukemia at the Medical City Hospital, Mandaluyong. After his treatment and discharge, he made his return on Eat Bulaga together with Ely Buendia, who was also recently discharged.'

'The King of Pinoy rap, was 44 years old.'

"I look forward to the pain as I know my journey is on full speed ahead. I will not be bold to say that without asking a favor from you all. PLEASE PRAY for me as I undergo treatment. Your prayers, as always, have sustained me. And am sure the Lord will listen to all our prayers.
To His will I submit myself."

What Is Draining Your Resource Pool?

I've read an article in PioneerThinking that there are a lot of factors that drain ourselves. those extra unimportant things that kept us from our goals and making us unproductive. Here are some list of what commonly drains our energy.

Spending too many hours in front of the Television
Car needs an oil change or other service/repair
Disorganized desk, office, home, garage
Clothing that is tattered or in need of update
Home décor that does not nurture your values/preferences
Negative people
Not being in a supportive relationship
Being in a relationship that needs to end
Working with people that result in you compromising your values
Lack of proper or needed office equipment
Overwhelmed with the mass of information that is bombarding you
Avoiding conflict or confrontation
Consistently stressful work leaving you exhausted/unsatisfied
Not enjoying your job
No personal interests that stimulate your mind
Having a health issue that you are not getting help with from a qualified professional
Not getting regular physical/dental check-ups
Partaking in food that is not good for you too often
Paying bills late
Paying taxes late
No plan for your financial future
Insufficient insurance coverage (life, home, auto etc)

===

Well, this is just some of the things that might drain our energy. Naturally, each one of us has different energy levels, and of course, different stresses. It's up to us how we should make our own list...and yes, I'm now making my own.

Car Safety Tips for Kids

As a family, you'll undoubtedly spend a lot of time in the car, traveling from play dates to soccer matches, from the grocery store to Grandma's house and back again. Make sure your child has a safe ride. Here are some tips to make sure your child is safe during these many trips:

1. Make sure your child rides in the backseat. The backseat is generally the safest place in a crash. If your vehicle has a passenger air bag, it's essential for children 12 and under to ride in back.

2. Make sure infants ride facing the rear until they're about age 1 and at least 20 to 22 pounds. Infants who weigh 20 pounds before 1 year of age should ride in a restraint approved for higher rear-facing weights. Always read your child restraint owner manual for instructions on properly using the restraint. Children over age 1 and at least 20 pounds may ride facing forward.

3. Check to see that the safety belt holds the seat tightly in place. Put the belt through the correct slot. If your safety seat can be used facing either way, use the correct belt slots for each direction. The safety belt must stay tight when securing the safety seat.

4. Make sure the harness is buckled snugly around your child. Keep the straps over your child's shoulder. The harness should be adjusted so you can slip only one finger underneath the straps at your child's chest. Place the chest clip at armpit level.

5. Have children over 40 pounds use a booster seat. Keep your child in a safety seat with a full harness as long as possible, until he's at least 40 pounds. Then use a belt-positioning booster seat, which helps the adult lap and shoulder belt fit better. A belt-positioning booster seat, used with the adult lap and shoulder belt, is preferred for children weighing 40 to 80 pounds.

6. Check safety belt fit on older children. The child must be tall enough to sit without slouching, with knees bent at the edge of the seat, with feet on the floor. The lap belt must fit low and tight across the upper thighs. The shoulder belt should rest over the shoulder and across the chest. Never put the shoulder belt under the child's arm or behind her back. The adult lap and shoulder belt system alone will not fit most children until they're at least 4 feet 9 inches tall and weigh about 80 pounds.

Bath Time Safety

One of the things I still struggle up to this time is making bath time really safe for my kids, especially my baby. I struggled to keep it safe with my first and I still am struggling to make it safe for my third. This is not as easy as one thinks especially if you're holding a bundle of energy who wants to do his own way while you keep him safe. Here are some list from Parents.com.

====

By age 2, kids need to bathe several times a week. Most kids are also ready to head to the big tub at this age, but usually need a parent's guiding hand when bathing. Here are some tips on keeping your toddler happy and safe at bath time:

*Don't force your child to take a bath. A squirming, wet child is an injury waiting to happen. So if your child refuses to bathe, give her a quick sponge bath instead.

*Set your water heater at 120 degrees or lower. Only fill the tub with five to six inches of water.

*Dip your entire hand (not just your fingertips) in the water, and swirl it around. This gives you a more accurate temperature reading.

*Cover the floor of the tub with textured adhesive strips or a rubber mat with suction cups. These can help prevent slips and falls. Also cover the bathroom floor with nonslip rugs.

*Make sure all tub and shower accessories are free from sharp edges. Also check that they are made of sturdy materials.

*Consider putting your toddler in a bath seat. This can prevent standing and slipping.

*Make sure your child knows he should never touch electrical outlets or appliances with wet hands. Keep radios, curling irons, and hair dryers out of the bathroom.

*Don't let your child sit in soap or shampoo suds. They may cause bladder infections, vaginal irritation, or irritation of the urethra. Note that the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend bubble baths for girls of any age.

*Use an unscented, moisturizing soap and a no-tears shampoo. They're easier on your child's delicate skin and eyes.

*Shampoo your child's hair after you wash his face and body. Most kids don't like water splashing in their ears or on their face while having their hair washed. You can also use a shampoo visor -- a device that fits over your child's head and shields his face from water and suds as you shampoo his hair.

*Make sure you rinse your child's hair in clean water. Run fresh warm water into the tub and, after testing the temperature, tip your child's scalp under the stream of water so you're not rinsing his hair in dirty water. Keep one hand in the stream of water so you'll notice any change in temperature.

*Remember that toddlers still need help getting out of the tub. After rinsing the shampoo out of your child's hair, lift her out of the tub and stand her beside it. Wrap her in a towel, and cover her wet head with another towel to prevent her from getting chilled.

==

Well, this can help, but remember, aside from making it safe - make it a fun time too since they would love it in the long run and will look forward to bath time!
