Leftover Onions IS Dangerous
I have used an onion which has been left in the fridge, and sometimes I
don't use a whole one at one time, so save the other half for later.
Now with this info, I have changed my mind....will buy smaller onions
in the future.
I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers
of mayonnaise. Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters
in the Mullins family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.
Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I
learned from a chemist.
The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed. He's one of the brothers Ed
is a chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce
formula. He's even developed sauce formula for McDonald's.
Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone
asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always
worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed
said that all commercially-made Mayo is completely safe.
"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it,
but it's not really necessary.." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise
is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment.
He then talked about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of
potato salad sit tin g on the table and how everyone blames the
mayonnaise when someone gets sick.![]()
Credits to Getty Images
Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the
officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those
onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the
mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the
outdoors. It's probably the onions, and if not the onions, it's the
POTATOES.
He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially
uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced
onion. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and
put it in your refrigerator.
It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a
bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those
onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!)
Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy
you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put
on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the
moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster
than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.
So, how's that for news? Take it for what you will. I (the author) am
going to be very careful about my onions from now on. For some reason,
I see a lot of credibility coming from a chemist and a company that
produces millions of pounds of mayonnaise every year.'
Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize
onions .Please remember it is dangerous to cut onions and try to use it
to cook the next day ,it becomes highly poisonous for even a single
night and creates Toxic bacteria which may cause Adverse Stomach
infections because of excess Bile secretions and even Food poisoning..

Breast Cancer 101
I got this info from a tag. I don't feel like tagging now but I like to share this info.
The breast is a gland designed to make milk. The lobules in the breast make the milk, which then drains through the ducts to the nipple.
Like all parts of your body, the cells in your breasts usually grow and then rest in cycles. The periods of growth and rest in each cell are controlled by genes in the cell's nucleus. The nucleus is like the control room of each cell. When your genes are in good working order, they keep cell growth under control. But when your genes develop an abnormality, they sometimes lose their ability to control the cycle of cell growth and rest.
Breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells.
Cancer has the potential to break through normal breast tissue barriers and spread to other parts of the body. While cancer is always caused by a genetic "abnormality" (a "mistake" in the genetic material), only 5–10% of cancers are inherited from your mother or father. Instead, 90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general.
While there are things every woman can do to help her body stay as healthy as possible (such as eating a balanced diet, not smoking, minimizing stress, and exercising regularly), breast cancer is never anyone's fault. Feeling guilty, or telling yourself that breast cancer happened because of something you or anyone else did, is counterproductive.

MIcrowave and Water
As he looked into the mug, he noted that the water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup 'blew up' into his face. The container remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His whole face is now blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.
He may also have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that, this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc.., (nothing metallic).
General Electric (USA) Response:
Thanks for contacting us, I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup/mug when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.
To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup/mug stand in the microwave for about thirty seconds! before moving it or adding anything into it.
Here is what our local science teacher had to say on the matter: "Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated and will particularly occur, if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, or when heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup/mug).
What happens is that, the water heats faster than the vapour bubbles can form. If the cup/mug is very new, then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.
What then usually happens is that, the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock, to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beverage spews when opened after having been shaken."

Safety First
One time, I saw him with a big cut on his left hand. He said that the culprit was one of the big wires he was trying to deform and one of the wires snapped. The worried me thought of tetanus and infection, but I was so thankful that the wound healed in a few days without complication.
After that incident, I prodded him to buy gloves. The one that I saw in Legion Safety Products was one of the few gloves that met the criteria I was looking for. It's a Dyneema gloves that's silicone-free and polymer coated which made it cut-resistant (I had to make sure of its quality because I don't like seeing those kind of wounds again).

When Recharging
Do not charge your mobile phone the whole night and DON'T keep it near you while charging. IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY!
I HOPE YOU'RE NOT DOING THIS!!! Never, ever answer a cell phone while it is being RECHARGED!!
A few days ago, a person was recharging his cell phone at home. Just at that time, a call came in and he answered it with the instrument still connected to the outlet. After a few seconds, electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud. His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers.
He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Cell phones are a very useful modern invention. However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument! of death. Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet!

Bedbugs
Don’t you just hate it when you know there might be bed bugs under your bed or even on it? And that your blood is being sucked out without knowing it (bedbugs are bloodsuckers)? So, if a common household got these teeny weeny bloodsuckers, isn’t it time to know something about bed bugs, especially how to get exterminate them?
Firewall for PC
These days, there are too many viruses looming around the net. If you are not cautious, the next thing you knew, your computer is already loaded with these brutal, wicked little monsters. The only way to avoid this is a firewall installation for your computer. That way, you know that your computer is secure. I think I need one since I’m downloading too much.

A Needle Can Save a Life
From a Chinese Professor.
Keep a syringe or needle in your home to do this...
It's amazing and an unconventional way of recovering from stroke, read it through it can help somebody one day.
This is amazing. Please keep this very handy. Excellent tips.
Do take a minute to read this. You'll never know, ones life may depend on you.
My father was paralyzed and later died from the result of a stroke. I wish I knew about this first aid before.
When stroke strikes, the capillaries in the brain will gradually burst. (Irene Liu)
When a stroke occurs, stay calm.
No matter where the victim is, do not move him/her.
Because, if moved, the capillaries will burst.
Help the victim to sit up where he/she is to prevent him/her from falling over again and then the blood letting can begin.
If you have in your home an injection syringe that would be the best.
Otherwise, a sewing needle or a straight pin will do.
1. Place the needle/pin over fire to sterilize it and then use it to prick the tip of all ......10 fingers.
2. There are no specific acupuncture points, just prick about an mm from the fingernail.
3. Prick till blood comes out.
4. If blood does not start to drip, then squeeze with your fingers.
5. When all 10 digits is bleeding, wait a few minutes then the victim will regain consciousness.
6. If the victim's mouth is crooked, then pull on his ears until they are red.
7. Then prick each earlobe twice until two drops of blood comes from each earlobe.
After a few minutes the victim should regain consciousness.
Wait till the victim regains his normal state without any abnormal symptoms then take him to the hospital.
Otherwise, if he was taken in the ambulance in a hurry to the hospital, the bumpy trip will cause all the capillaries in his brain to burst.
If he could save his life, barely managing to walk, then it is by the grace of his ancestors.
'I learned about letting blood to save life from Chinese traditional doctor, Ha Bu Ting, who lives in Sun Juke.
Furthermore, I had practical experience with it. Therefore, I can say this method is 100% effective.
In 1979, I was teaching in Fung Gaap College in Tai Chung.
One afternoon, I was teaching a class when another teacher came running to my classroom and said in panting,
'Ms Liu, come quick, our supervisor has had a stroke!'. I immediately went to the 3rd floor.
When I saw our supervisor, Mr. Chen Fu Tien, his colour was off, his speech was slurred, his mouth was crooked - all the symptoms of a stroke.
I immediately asked one of the practicum students to go to the pharmacy outside the school to buy a syringe, which I used to prick Mr. Chen's 10 fingers tips.
When all 10 fingers were bleeding (each with a pea-sized drop of blood), after a few minutes, Mr. Chen's > face regained its colour and his eyes' spirit returned, too.
But his mouth was still crooked. So I pulled on his ears to fill them with blood.
When his ears became red,
I pricked his right earlobe twice to let out two drops of blood.
When both earlobes had two drops of blood each, a miracle happened.
Within 3-5 minutes the shape of his mouth returned to normal and his speech became clear.
We let him rest for a while and have a cup of hot tea, then we helped him go down the stairs, drove him to Wei Wah Hospital . He rested one night and was released the next day to return to school to teach. Everything worked normally.
There were no ill after effects.
On the other hand, the usual stroke victim usually suffers Irreparable bursting of the brain capillaries on the way to the hospital.
As a result, these victims never recover.' (Irene Liu)Therefore, stroke is the second cause of death. The lucky ones will stay alive but can remain paralyzed for life.
It is such a horrible thing to happen in ones life.
If we can all remember this blood letting method and start the life saving process immediately, in a short time, the victim > will be revived and regain 100% normality.

Part D Benefit for GrandMa
Well for one, she’s living a healthy lifestyle – and that’s very important. Second, she’s a jetsetter mind you? Traveled around the world, my dear granny and was once a beauty queen in her time (well, in the whole province). And none of us her grandchildren made it to being a beauty queen nor joined one! She, I would assume made so many things in her lifetime and I admire her for that.
Now that she’s aged (beautifully), there are really things that we cannot ignore when we get old, and the one thing that we made sure she will get is Medicare D Enrollment since it is quite important since getting old means taking more medicines. So what is this Medicare Part D? It’s in fact drug benefit insurance for Medicare holders. In our times when medicines can be pricey, such an assurance of being covered particularly for people like granny made it more reasonable, more so that there are companies who offer cost free comparison (especially if it's a Medicare Part D deductible). That alone is a big help, not necessarily to defray but at least to minimize costs. Do you have it? In this ever polluted world, this makes a difference.

Helpful Transport
Last year, the company where my husband worked had a bidding with the several vehicles they wanted to dispose. Luckily, my husband won a van from that bidding. The problem was that the van was in another place. At first, we sought the help of a friend to process the papers and all the stuff involve in shipping the said vehicle to us. Unfortunately, I guess, there was a misunderstanding somewhere and it never got shipped. We were already quite concerned with what to do with the vehicle because it’s been months already since the time we acquired it. Luckily, a friend of mine suggested a car transport that really worked. It was such a relief that the van FINALLY arrived.

8 Products NOT To Buy For Kids
1. Trampolines. A trampoline is an accident waiting to happen. In 2003, the latest year for which data are available, some 98,000 trampoline-related injuries resulted in emergency room visits, according to the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission. At least 6 deaths have been reported since 1990.
2. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Consumers Union has long been critical of ATVs; early models, especially, were unstable, and many young people who rode them couldn't handle them. Designs have changed, though we still don't think children under 16 should ride ATVs. Of more than 450 ATV deaths in 2004, the latest year available, roughly one third involved children under 16.
3. Inflatable pools. We're concerned about a certain type of pool on the market: Inflatable pools that hold hundreds, sometimes thousands, of gallons of water. These pools, which start at around $50, are too big to dump the water out of every day, and too inexpensive for most people to consider installing a fence. So they sit unattended in the backyard, a drowning hazard.
4. Yo-yo balls. This toy looks like fun; you might see it as a birthday party favor. But the first versions were dangerous because they could wrap around a child's neck; we judged them "Not Acceptable" in 2003. We repeated that warning in 2005 when another Yo-Yo ball model was released, this time with a small flashing light that could come loose and cause choking (see our 2005 report). At least one state and several countries have banned Yo-yo balls. The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission has received 16 complaints about victims loosing consciousness, and 400 other complaints.
5. Baby bath seats. These seats attach to the side of the tub, and can give parents a false sense of stability. They've been associated with roughly 120 drownings and 160 injuries since 1983. Nearly all those deaths occurred when a parent or caregiver left the baby unattended momentarily. (Note that baby bath seats are different than baby bathtubs, which have a steeply angled back that helps the parent support the baby during baths. Baby bathtubs are useful provided caretakers don't leave the child unattended.)
6. Soft bedding. The ads in baby magazines suggest that if your crib isn't spilling over with frills and fluff, you're somehow shirking your parental duty. In fact, the safest crib is one that has a firm mattress, a snug-fitting mattress pad and crib sheet--and nothing else. No bumper guards, no stuffed animals, no pillows, no quilts. Experts have long recognized the suffocation risk inherent in such soft crib bedding.
7. Sleep positioners. These are wedge-shaped pieces of foam meant to keep infants in a secure sleeping position. But we believe they're a suffocation hazard and our medical experts don't recommend them. (See our March 2005 report and video on sleep-positioner dangers.)
8. Changing tables with only 3 side rails. Changing tables are associated with 2,000 to 3,000 injuries per year, and many of these involve changing tables that have just three side rails. A new industry standard will require changing tables to have barriers on all four sides. Seek out this type when buying a changing table.

Car Safety Tips for Kids
1. Make sure your child rides in the backseat. The backseat is generally the safest place in a crash. If your vehicle has a passenger air bag, it's essential for children 12 and under to ride in back.
2. Make sure infants ride facing the rear until they're about age 1 and at least 20 to 22 pounds. Infants who weigh 20 pounds before 1 year of age should ride in a restraint approved for higher rear-facing weights. Always read your child restraint owner manual for instructions on properly using the restraint. Children over age 1 and at least 20 pounds may ride facing forward.
3. Check to see that the safety belt holds the seat tightly in place. Put the belt through the correct slot. If your safety seat can be used facing either way, use the correct belt slots for each direction. The safety belt must stay tight when securing the safety seat.
4. Make sure the harness is buckled snugly around your child. Keep the straps over your child's shoulder. The harness should be adjusted so you can slip only one finger underneath the straps at your child's chest. Place the chest clip at armpit level.
5. Have children over 40 pounds use a booster seat. Keep your child in a safety seat with a full harness as long as possible, until he's at least 40 pounds. Then use a belt-positioning booster seat, which helps the adult lap and shoulder belt fit better. A belt-positioning booster seat, used with the adult lap and shoulder belt, is preferred for children weighing 40 to 80 pounds.
6. Check safety belt fit on older children. The child must be tall enough to sit without slouching, with knees bent at the edge of the seat, with feet on the floor. The lap belt must fit low and tight across the upper thighs. The shoulder belt should rest over the shoulder and across the chest. Never put the shoulder belt under the child's arm or behind her back. The adult lap and shoulder belt system alone will not fit most children until they're at least 4 feet 9 inches tall and weigh about 80 pounds.

Bath Time Safety
====
By age 2, kids need to bathe several times a week. Most kids are also ready to head to the big tub at this age, but usually need a parent's guiding hand when bathing. Here are some tips on keeping your toddler happy and safe at bath time:
*Don't force your child to take a bath. A squirming, wet child is an injury waiting to happen. So if your child refuses to bathe, give her a quick sponge bath instead.
*Set your water heater at 120 degrees or lower. Only fill the tub with five to six inches of water.
*Dip your entire hand (not just your fingertips) in the water, and swirl it around. This gives you a more accurate temperature reading.
*Cover the floor of the tub with textured adhesive strips or a rubber mat with suction cups. These can help prevent slips and falls. Also cover the bathroom floor with nonslip rugs.
*Make sure all tub and shower accessories are free from sharp edges. Also check that they are made of sturdy materials.
*Consider putting your toddler in a bath seat. This can prevent standing and slipping.
*Make sure your child knows he should never touch electrical outlets or appliances with wet hands. Keep radios, curling irons, and hair dryers out of the bathroom.
*Don't let your child sit in soap or shampoo suds. They may cause bladder infections, vaginal irritation, or irritation of the urethra. Note that the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend bubble baths for girls of any age.
*Use an unscented, moisturizing soap and a no-tears shampoo. They're easier on your child's delicate skin and eyes.
*Shampoo your child's hair after you wash his face and body. Most kids don't like water splashing in their ears or on their face while having their hair washed. You can also use a shampoo visor -- a device that fits over your child's head and shields his face from water and suds as you shampoo his hair.
*Make sure you rinse your child's hair in clean water. Run fresh warm water into the tub and, after testing the temperature, tip your child's scalp under the stream of water so you're not rinsing his hair in dirty water. Keep one hand in the stream of water so you'll notice any change in temperature.
*Remember that toddlers still need help getting out of the tub. After rinsing the shampoo out of your child's hair, lift her out of the tub and stand her beside it. Wrap her in a towel, and cover her wet head with another towel to prevent her from getting chilled.
==
Well, this can help, but remember, aside from making it safe - make it a fun time too since they would love it in the long run and will look forward to bath time!

Paranoia
Crucial because of recent abductions in daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation...
Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
Learned this from a tourist guide:
*In New Orleans, If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM, toss it away from you...chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
*If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
*Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. - DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
*If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.
*A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.)Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.
(And better paranoid than dead.)
*ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)
*If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably! In a zigzag pattern!
*As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
*Another Safety Point: Someone said that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night. The Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America 's Most Wanted when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

Asthma and the Purified Air
A month ago, my youngest that’s only ten months old got hit with pneumonia, my second got upper respiratory tract infection, and my daughter, the eldest, got bronchitis. It’s so hard to be in a situation where the concern is my children’s overall health.
So, how do I avoid it?
One, I try to explain as much as possible to them that they should cover their mouths and noses when somebody sneezes or coughs, and if and when they do the same. In our little home, I bought an EcoQuest International air purifiers, to lessen their allergic reactions (since hay fever is normally allergic to dusts and dust mites). And at this time, I think it’s really working for them because the sneezing is lessened when I installed it!

PC Defense by Free Antivirus Download
Just last Sunday, I blogged about the upgrade my PC got re: changing my DVD into a DVD writer and installing another HDD to my satisfaction with 160GB. Now that I have these ones installed, I am now uploading and downloading stuff especially freebie digital scrapping materials from the net, songs from my compact discs, organizing a lot of things here and there. Pictures, songs, and other bits and pieces that I have compiled or like, I put it now in my F drive to minimize the space of my drive C.
With things like this, it is really very important to have an antivirus scanner so that my computer gets protected from these silent, unwanted and fatal bugs. If not, I surely would be saying goodbye to all my deemed important stuff, and I don’t ever want my PC to crash down.
One sure thing to do is to get a Free Antivirus Download available online. A CyberDefender would be nice as it prevents all the unwanted stuff crawling on our PC every time we connect such as malware, spyware, viruses and even identity theft (I think that is what phishing is all about – I always see phishing alerts especially when we encode vital data into the system). Oh well, it made me remember a movie (which I forgot the title) by Sandra Bullock where her identity and everything about her on the system got hacked.
That would be too much though.
