I was going over the coral reefs when I was surfing and it made me stop and think, what are some of the weird fishes around? Let's all find out.
Estuary Catfish, Cnidoglanis macrocephalus, a large catfish capable of causing painful injuries to swimmers. Also a popular eating fish in some parts of Australia, Jervis Bay, New South Wales, Australia, Pacific Ocean
Eastern Stargazer, Kathetostoma laeve, a Juvenile Stargazer buried in sand, Edithburgh, South Australia, Australia, Southern Ocean
Short finned Sunfish, Ranzania laevis, a smaller cousin of the Mola Mola. They are found in most seas but not commonly seen. Here in Southern Australia they are occasionaly found washed ashore, Two Peoples Bay, Western Australia, Australia, Southern Ocean
Usually hidden, this
yellow colored Painted Frogfish (Antennarius pictus) was perched out in the open on top of a small coral head. The fishing lure, though not extended, can be clearly seen, especially the peculiarly shaped bait on the end. Image taken on the coral reef that surrounds Gato Island off of Cebu and Malapascua Island in The Philippines.
Smooth Anglerfish, Phyllophryne scortea, anglerfish found actively swimming at night under a jetty, coffin Bay, SoutH Australia, Australia, Southern Ocean
Splendid Toadfish (Sanopus splendidus) under a reef ledge in Cozumel, Mexico. Occasionally this fish is known as a Crested Toadfish. Cozumel is the only known habitat for this fish.
A pale pink or orange color phased
Warty Frogfish (Antennarius maculatus) sits amongst the rocks on the bottom of the ocean floor on the shore muck dive at Basura at Anilao in the Batangas region of the The Philippines. Frogfish are ambush predators and through coloration and selection of their location they lie in wait for their prey to swim by then explode forward to capture their target. This fish is often known as the Clown Frogfish, especially when in the small, white phase rather than this coloration phase.
A pair of
Crinoid Clingfish (Discotrema crinophila) deep within a host Crinoid on a coral reef at night off Mabul Island in Sabah, Malaysia. These fish live within these crinoids for protection and are difficult to photograph without disturbing the crinoid unnecessarily.

This dark headed
Jawfish (Opistognathidae sp? - Opistognathus sp) was spotted in Cozumel,Mexico. Possibly a Yellowhead Jawfish variation DSI is looking for further information on this species
Old Wife, Enoplosus armatus, School of this common shallow water fish. Their name is derived from the grating sound they make when stressed, Wool BAy, South Australia, Australia, Southern Ocean

An adult
Zebra Shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) with a large hook in its mouth, rests on top of a coral wall. A small
Sharksucker (Echeneis naucrates) is attached to the sharks side. This shark is often referred locally as a 'Leopard Shark' due to its spots, however the Zebra Shark name comes from the juvenile patterning which consists of large dark stripes. Image taken in the early morning at 'Barracuda Point' off the coast of Sipidan in Sabah, Malaysia

Western Blue Devil, Paraplesiops meleagris, a stunning fish that is found on southern reefs usually hiding in a cave or under a ledge. They are relatives of the hula fishes, Bremer Bay, Western Australia, Australia, Southern Ocean.
